Republishing and Licenses
Updated
Some of what appears on From the Surviving Record can be reused freely, some cannot, and some belongs to other people. Every image and table carries its own credit line, and that line is the final word on its license. This page explains the categories.
Diagrams and data tables: CC BY 4.0
Diagrams drawn for this site, such as timelines and mechanism diagrams, and the CSV data tables offered for download beside entries are released under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license (CC BY 4.0): https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/. You may copy, share and adapt them, including for commercial use, as long as you give credit.
Each diagram and table comes with a ready-made credit line. The pattern is:
"{Diagram title}" by From the Surviving Record, CC BY 4.0. Source: {full URL of the page} — License: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
To fill it in, replace {Diagram title} with the title given in that diagram's or table's credit line, and {full URL of the page} with the full address of the entry where it appears. For a table, the title is the table's name. If you have adapted the diagram or table, say so after the credit.
A link back to the entry is the easiest way to give that credit, and it is welcome. Beyond the license's own attribution terms, it is not a condition of reuse.
The open license covers only the diagrams and data tables described here. It does not extend to the written text of entries.
Diagrams drawn over another base
Some diagrams are drawn over a third-party base, such as a public-domain chart. Their credit line has an extra line beginning Base chart: that gives the base's own credit and license, and the base remains under that license. If the base carries a share-alike license, the diagram drawn over it is released under CC BY-SA 4.0 instead, and its credit line says so.
Illustrations: not under CC BY
Scenes drawn for this site are labeled as illustrations, and each one carries this credit line:
Illustration: From the Surviving Record. Generated schematic image — not a photograph or historical record. © From the Surviving Record, all rights reserved.
These illustrations are not covered by CC BY 4.0 and are not licensed for reuse. They show a scene, not evidence, and they never stand in for a real ship, artifact, person or historical image.
Photographs, engravings and paintings by others
Images made by others keep their own status, named in each credit line together with the creator and the page the image came from. The kinds used here include:
- public-domain historical photographs, engravings and paintings, with the basis for public-domain status stated in the credit line;
- works that museums have released under CC0;
- works by employees of the United States federal government made as part of their official duties, which are not protected by copyright in the United States under 17 U.S.C. §105;
- photographs under Creative Commons Attribution licenses, such as CC BY 2.0.
To reuse one of these, follow the license in its credit line. The CC BY 4.0 grant above does not apply to them.
Some sources consulted for the entries allow no commercial reuse. Material from those sources is summarized in the text and linked, and is never reproduced on the site, in a table or in an image.
Fonts
The site is set in Libre Caslon Text, Source Serif 4 and IBM Plex Mono. All three are licensed under the SIL Open Font License, Version 1.1: openfontlicense.org. The font files are served from this site.
Citing an entry
Each entry ends with a Cite this page block. It gives the site name, the entry's title, the date it was published, the date of its last substantive revision and its permanent address; add the date you consulted it. No DOI is assigned to any entry.
When an entry is corrected, its revision date changes, so a citation with both dates shows which version was read. Changes are listed on the corrections log.
Questions about reuse can be sent through the contact page.
