Reporting an error
Error reports are always welcome. A wrong date, a headcount that does not match the sources, a misread figure, a misquoted line or a source that does not say what the entry claims it says are all worth sending.
A report is easiest to check when it gives:
- the address of the entry;
- the sentence, table row or registry card field in question;
- what is wrong with it;
- the source that shows it, with a page number or a link.
When a report checks out, the entry is corrected and the change is logged in public, at the foot of the entry and on the corrections log. The evidence levels page explains how sources are weighed against each other.
Suggesting documents and images
Leads to primary documents are welcome: logs, inquiry reports, inquest records, catalogues and letters, especially public-domain scans that can be read online. So are openly licensed images that bear on an entry.
Please include the page where the item can be found and its license or copyright status. Only material whose license allows commercial use and adaptation can appear here; images under non-commercial or no-derivatives licenses cannot be used. The republishing page explains how licenses are handled.
What this address does not handle
Some requests fall outside what this site does:
- questions about travel, cruises, sailing courses or gear;
- survival, diving, climbing or seamanship advice;
- treasure hunting, salvage, or the location of wreck sites, many of which are protected as cultural heritage;
- legal claims or compensation;
- allegations about living people;
- news of accidents, investigations, lawsuits or searches still under way.
No reply time is promised, and a reply is not guaranteed. The outcome of an error report shows on the entry itself and in the corrections log.
